Adult Outpatient Services

OAMHC offers counseling and psychiatric services to adults who are experiencing emotional or psychiatric distress, with emphasis directed to individuals with serious mental illnesses and significant emotional disorders. Our clinicians will provide a variety of evidenced based treatments as we strive to support our patients’ recovery in the community.

These and other programs are available to patients depending on their individual needs and problems. When you first come to the center, your counselor will discuss with you how we can work with you to improve your situation. If there are other resources or providers that might better meet your needs, we will help you make contact with them.

Child, Adolescent and Family Services (CAF)

Programs & Services

OAMHC provides counseling and psychiatric services to families and to those children and adolescents who are experiencing emotional, relational, and/or behavioral problems. Our goal is to help children and their families reduce behavior and problems that may lead to interference or dissolution of the community/ home placement or the disruption in school attendance and performance. Family participation is encouraged and is felt to be an essential component of treatment and recovery. Our clinicians also work cooperatively with the schools and other involved community agencies as needed. Services may be provided at a center office, in the child’s school setting, and/or in the home. Specialized intensive treatment services may be offered if indicated.

Community based services that strive to reduce psychiatric hospitalizations and law enforcement involvement, while increasing their community integration.

At the beginning of your treatment and at intervals throughout your course of treatment, you and your clinician will discuss your reasons for seeking assistance and the changes you would like to see in your life. The assessment will cover many areas of your life and background so that the clinician can assess which services will best meet your needs. Your clinician will work cooperatively with you to develop your treatment plan and to choose the array of services that will be best suited to you.

OAMHC has trained staff available 24 hours a day to assist with anyone who is experiencing a psychiatric crisis. This service may take place either face-to-face or over the phone with the intentions of helping to stabilize the situation, reduce your immediate personal distress, and to reduce the chance of future crises. You would be linked to other resources if they are needed to stabilize the situation.

The mission of Services to Deaf and Hard of Hearing People within the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities (BHDD) Office of Mental Health is to provide a statewide system of care for the delivery of mental health services which promote recovery and allow enhanced mental functioning for Adults, Children and Families where Deafness presents a significant cultural and/or linguistic barrier. A mobile Mental Health Clinic that delivers comprehensive and effective services to patients who have needs that have not been met by traditional approaches in Orangeburg, Bamberg, and Calhoun Counties.

HOUSING Programs provide housing to those eligible patients who are homeless and/or those with a history of treatment compliance, few hospitalizations, and few emergency department visits. Services are primarily provided in their own homes and are designed to help the patient live independently in the community.

INDIVIDUAL PLACEMENT SERVICES involves assisting patients become successfully employed in the community. Our program partners with Vocational Rehabilitation and has received national honors for its effort to increase access to supported, competitive employment for adults with serious mental illness.

Counseling is provided by clinicians and can take place individually, with your family, or in a group setting, depending on your preferences and needs. Once you meet individually with your clinician to establish your needs and goals for treatment, counseling will be focused on helping you address these needs and meet your goals. Depending on your individual goals, you may be asked to participate in a group with others who are coping with similar issues. Some groups are designed to target a specific problem, such as coping with depression. Other groups may focus more generally on issues, including improving social skills or helping you deal with emotions, such as anger or loneliness.

Provides highly individualized, intensive services, to those who have not benefited from traditional mental health care. The services are usually provided in the home or community with the focus of helping the client live successfully in their community. ACT staff are on-call after hours to be able to assist when needs arise.

The Mobile Call Center provide after-hour emergency contact twenty-four (24) hours a day, seven (7) days a week, and will respond to calls immediately. The contact number is toll-free 1-833-364-2274.

An evidenced based therapy designed to help people suffering from mood disorders as well as those who need to change patterns of behavior that are not helpful, such as self-harm or suicidal ideation. Patients in this program learn how to identify their emotional triggers and develop skills to utilize in coping and decreasing their harmful behaviors.

Multi-Dimensional Family Therapy is a manualized, family centered treatment and substance misuse prevention program for youths with substance use disorders and problem behaviors (such as aggression, truancy, and other mental comorbidities). The program is designated to address and reduce a range of behavior challenges such as cannabis use and juvenile offending. At Orangeburg Area Mental Health Center, we service children and young adults 9-26 years old.

To provide safe, effective, and evidence based mental health services for detainees incarcerated at Orangeburg County Detention Center to enhance the individual’s physical, psychological, and social development.

Peer Support specialists are people living in recovery with mental illness and who provide support to others who are in treatment for a mental illness. The trained peer support specialist gives advice and guidance, provides insight, shares information on services, and empowers the beneficiary to make healthy decisions.

Medical Services can be provided by Physicians, Physician’s Assistants, Nurse Practitioners, and/or Nurses. The doctor will review your health history and presenting needs and will talk with you to assess the nature and severity of your issue and to consider whether medication is indicated. If you are placed on medication, you will see the nurse or other medical staff periodically to monitor your response to the medication and to provide continued assessment and make any adjustments to the medication if needed. We have the capability if needed, via tele-psychiatry, to have a psychiatrist deliver a live evaluation from a remote location.

Patients who need continued support to live in the community can receive services that are designed to learn and improve the skills needed to promote independence and increase self-esteem. Education about mental illness for the client is an important component of this service.

Provides mental health programs that address early intervention and prevention services for schools and the community. Provides training on mental health issues and consultation for teachers and other school staff on specific children and/or general mental health topics to support the academic achievement of students within the context of his or her social and emotional well-being.

Community based services are designed to address the needs of those patients who have been hospitalized in order to help them remain in the community and avoid re-hospitalization.
