Patrick B. Harris Psychiatric Hospital (HPH)

Patrick B. Harris Psychiatric Hospital (HPH) is an acute care psychiatric inpatient facility located in Anderson, South Carolina.  It is the only public psychiatric inpatient facility located in the Upstate and serves 13 counties providing short-term, intensive psychiatric diagnostic and treatment services on an involuntary, inpatient, basis.

ABOUT US

The 167,255 Square foot facility was built in 1984 and is licensed for 200 beds.  The hospital currently consists of 5 patient lodges, male and female, for acute and intermediate psychiatric patients, which provide shared therapeutic space for normal daily living activities for adult male and female patients.  Patients must be at least 18 years of age to be eligible for admission.  The entire facility and its campus are smoke free.

In 1981, while construction was in process, the Mental Health Commission voted to name the hospital in honor of then Representative Patrick B. Harris, an advocate and champion for the cause of the mentally ill and handicapped in South Carolina.  Affectionately known as “Mr. Pat,” Representative Harris served as an esteemed member of the South Caroline House of Representatives for 27 years.  He died in 2001 at the age of 90.

The facility serves patients from 13 counties in the upstate area including Oconee, Pickens, Anderson, Greenville, Spartanburg, Cherokee, Union, Abbeville, Laurens, McCormick, Greenwood, Edgefield, and Saluda. In addition to providing patient care, HPH is a training site for three medical schools, six nursing schools and other graduate degree training programs that include: social work, pharmacology, activity therapy, dieticians, and nurse practitioners.

MISSION

The Mission of HPH is to provide intensive, short-term, inpatient diagnosis and treatment for mentally ill patients who reside in the thirteen (13) counties served by the facility.  The hospital utilizes a team approach for treatment planning, implementation, coordination of total care, and continuity of aftercare.  These services are provided with the least amount of patient restriction as possible, and maximum opportunities for each patient’s recovery.  At HPH meeting patient and family needs are a top priority.

VISION

HPH will become recognized regionally and eventually nationally as a center of excellence in the provision of mental health services.  Among the mental health centers it serves, it will be recognized as a steadfast partner in patient recovery and a reliable support in fulfilling the goals set for them by the agency.
