BHDD Office of Mental Health is a leading provider of inpatient mental health, and substance use services. Inpatient programs are offered for individuals who may need a more intensive level of treatment and care.

BHDD Office of Mental Health offers a system of inpatient services programs and facilities that are operational twenty-four hours per day providing:

  • Inpatient psychiatric treatment for children, adolescents, and adults
  • Forensic evaluation and treatment services for adults
  • Substance use disorders treatment for adults
  • Treatment for adults adjudicated as sexually violent predators is provided by independent contractor

BHDD Office of Mental Health clinical staff provide a complete array of necessary mental health services for children, adolescents, adults, and families. Following a thorough assessment, treatment plans are tailored to meet the needs of each individual patient. Services may include individual, group, and family therapy with a trained therapist, psychiatric medical assessments with a Psychiatrist or Nurse Practitioner, supportive nursing services, crisis intervention, and care coordination. G. Werber Bryan Psychiatric Hospital (BPH) provides inpatient psychiatric and forensic treatment and evaluation services to adults, and psychiatric and substance use disorder treatment to children and adolescents. BPH has three campuses that provide 24-hour assessment, evidence-based treatment, and evaluation of individuals experiencing a mental health disorder. BPH offers a continuum of care from acute services designed to return patients to community treatment, to longterm treatment with referral to other community resources (e.g., apartments, community care homes, or nursing homes). BPH is licensed by the South Carolina Department of Public Health, accredited by The Joint Commission (TJC), and certified by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) for all services provided with the exception of Forensic Services which is not CMS certified.  The Adult Civil, William S.     Adult patients are admitted from throughout the state with referrals from community mental health centers. The majority of patients are civil involuntary admissions.
  • William S. Hall Psychiatric Institute at Bryan Hospital (Child and Adolescent Acute Psychiatric Services)

    Child and adolescent patients are admitted from throughout the state with referrals primarily from community mental health centers, hospital emergency departments (EDs), the family court system, and the Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ). Patients are admitted on voluntary and involuntary status.
  • Forensic Services

    Bryan Forensic Services include a secure treatment facility that provides inpatient and outpatient evaluation and treatment. Patients are admitted from across the state through the criminal or probate court system. The legal status of patients includes: Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity (NGRI), incompetent to stand trial (IST), and pretrial status with charges pending.

Harris provides inpatient psychiatric services to adults. Harris is licensed by the South Carolina Department of Public Health, accredited by TJC, and certified by CMS. Patients are admitted primarily from the 13 counties of the upstate of SC with referral from community mental health centers. The majority of patients are civil involuntary admissions. Harris offers a continuum of care from acute services designed to return patients to community treatment, to long-term treatment with referral to other community resources (e.g., apartments, community care homes, or nursing homes).

Morris Village provides inpatient treatment for adults with substance use disorders (SUD) and when indicated, SUD accompanied by psychiatric illness. Morris Village is licensed by the South Carolina Department of Public Health and accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities. Patients are admitted from throughout the state with referrals primarily from community mental health centers and community drug and alcohol commissions. Admission status of patients may be voluntary or civil involuntary.

Sexually Violent Predator Treatment Program (SVPTP)

The SVPTP was established by legislation to provide treatment for persons adjudicated as sexually violent predators. The program is located in a freestanding building on the grounds of the SC Department of Corrections. Residents are admitted from throughout the state of SC. The SVPTP is operated by an independent contractor.

  • All 16 BHDD Office of Mental Health community mental health centers are accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF), an independent, nonprofit accreditor of health and human services.
  • Morris Village Treatment Center, the Agency’s inpatient drug and alcohol treatment facility, is licensed by the South Carolina Department of Public Health and accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF), an independent, nonprofit accreditor of health and human services.
  • Both of BHDD Office of Mental Health’s psychiatric hospitals are accredited by the Joint Commission and licensed by the South Carolina Department of Public Health.
  • Each of BHDD Office of Mental Health’s nursing homes is licensed by the South Carolina Department of Public Health and certified by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.
